Excessus Records represents a wide range of styles and subgenres. This section is dedicated to those who want to better understand our musical approach. The styles and subgenres are explained in a general way. The label does not aim to impose a rigid categorization of sounds, but rather to provide guidance for listeners who are discovering our musical universe.
Most of our productions are not limited to a single subgenre but combine multiple influences. That’s why we avoid classifying our tracks by subgenre or BPM. Instead, we prefer to talk in terms of atmospheres.
Below you will find an explanation of these atmospheres, which help us navigate and interpret each track.
Darkprog, or dark progressive trance, incorporates darker, more atmospheric elements than traditional progressive trance. It generally features deep, hypnotic bass lines, haunting melodies and complex rhythmic patterns. Darkprog tracks often evoke a sense of introspection, mystery and emotional depth, with an emphasis on building tension and creating a journey-like experience for the listener.
Darkforest emphasises organic, earthy sounds and a deep connection with nature. It generally features rhythmic patterns inspired by the sounds of the forest, such as rustling leaves, animal calls and running water. It often has a slower tempo than other sub-genres of psytrance, and aims to evoke a sense of mysticism and exploration of the natural world.
Darkpsy is characterised by its intense, fast rhythms, twisted melodies and dark, atmospheric themes. It often incorporates strange sound effects, distorted synths and unconventional rhythms to create a hypnotic, supernatural atmosphere. She uses mournful sounds and heavy bass lines.
Dark Hi-Tech is characterised by its intense, energetic rhythms, futuristic sounds and dark themes. It shares similarities with darkpsy and hitech trance, but tends to have a more aggressive and fast-paced approach. Dark Hi-Tech often uses a lot of distortion, glitch effects and complex rhythmic patterns, creating a chaotic, dystopian atmosphere on the dancefloor.
Psycore is known for its extreme and intense characteristics. It features fast tempos, complex rhythms, heavy bass lines and aggressive sound design. Psycore often incorporates elements of industrial, hardcore techno and experimental music, resulting in a chaotic and hallucinatory aural experience. It is renowned for its high energy and unconventional approach to trance music.
Tekno, an offshoot of techno, stands out for its sustained tempos, often between 150 and 185 bpm, with an insistent rhythm. Unlike techno, it generally avoids the distortion of this component. Some producers also incorporate elements of trance, resulting from the interaction between the tekno subculture and the psytrance subculture.
Tribecore is a style of electronic music that emerged in France in the late 1990s. It is characterised by its fast pace and use of distorted bass drums, powerful synths and repetitive rhythms. Tribecore songs are often influenced by industrial techno and hardcore, creating an energetic and frenetic atmosphere on the dance floor.
Mentalcore is a sub-genre of techno music characterised by an intense and aggressive sound. It features fast beats, heavy bass and distorted, chaotic sound elements, which can sometimes create a sense of unease or disorientation. Mentalcore tracks often incorporate unconventional sound experiments and song structures, pushing the boundaries of traditional techno music.
Acidcore is a musical and aesthetic style that blends electronic music, particularly acid house, with the energy of hardcore. It is characterized by deep basslines and fast rhythms, often accompanied by a psychedelic and chaotic visual aesthetic. This style is associated with counterculture scenes, emphasizing sound experimentation, intensity, and an energetic atmosphere, typical of raves and festivals.
